BASIC DINGHY SAILING

Learn the skills to confidently and safely sail a small dinghy—even if it’s your first time on the water!

Basic Dinghy Sailing

This three-hour course introduces students to the essential skills needed to sail a small dinghy safely and confidently—even with no prior experience! A brief shoreside session covers sailing fundamentals such as steering, sail trim, tacking, and jibing. Then, students head out on the water to practice rigging, launching, and sailing with an instructor close by. The course also includes how to recover from a capsize. Once students demonstrate these core skills, they become eligible for Boat Access.

Sunfish sailing has strong roots in St. Thomas.
The first ever Sunfish World Championship was sailed just off our yacht club’s shores as shown in these images!
The event is still going strong with the 2026 event taking place in St. Croix!
